Recent comments from Ukrainian leaders seem to indicate increasing friction between the nations, specifically concerning entry rights for Ukrainian citizens into Israel.
Echoing the President’s sentiment, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel expressed that Ukraine won’t stand for any mistreatment of its citizens entering Israel and even hinted at the potential suspension of bilateral visa waiver deals.
“It’s inconceivable for Ukraine to host countless Israelis in Uman, considering the high security and logistical demands, while Israeli authorities mistreat our citizens who visit under a treaty.”
The Ambassador also appealed to Israel’s Prime Minister, Mr. Netanyahu, to step in and rectify the situation.
However, these allegations don’t seem to align with Israel’s historical relationship with Ukraine. Since the onset of the war, Israel has provided massive amounts of medical and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. Additionally, it has welcomed thousands of Ukrainian refugees, extending their health benefits and visas for longer durations. Moreover, Israel’s Law of Return allows Ukrainians with a Jewish lineage to become citizens, a generous offer that many have declined, holding hope to return to their homeland post-war.
Addressing the allegations, Israeli Interior and Health Minister Mr. Arbel responded, “Israel’s immigration policy welcomes tourists from many countries in the world, including from Ukraine.” Arbel clarified that any actions taken by the Population, Immigration and Border Authority are within legal bounds, especially when there are suspicions of individuals misusing their tourist visas.
