The Population and Immigration Authority has taken a significant stride in modernizing passport and ID card applications by introducing an online submission system. This move aims to streamline the application process, reducing the need for individuals to physically visit Authority offices, thus minimizing queues and wait times.

Online Application Process and Eligibility

The system enables applicants to verify their eligibility remotely before proceeding with the application. It’s important to note that each family member must submit a separate application. While this online process provides convenience, passports issued or renewed through it will have a validity of five years only, and modifications to passport details will not be feasible.

Limitations of Online-Issued Passports

One crucial detail to consider is that passports obtained through the online system will not meet the requirements for obtaining a visa waiver for entry into the US, as they must be valid for ten years.

Response to Passport Processing Backlogs

The initiative, spearheaded, comes in response to a previous backlog in passport processing, which necessitated emergency measures such as the ‘passport marathon.’ During this period, around 400,000 passports were issued within a span of two months, alleviating much of the backlog temporarily.

Long-Term Solutions and Automated Systems

Recognizing the need for a more sustainable solution, the Authority explored various options, including automated passport machines. However, it became evident that remote issuance via the internet was the optimal long-term approach. Now, individuals aged 18 and above, who are physically present in Israel and have already registered biometric data with the Authority, can take advantage of this online service.
