Last week the Australian Government announced that with effect from Monday 28th September, the current weekly caps on international returnees into Australia (which were introduced back in July) will be gradually increased by 2,000 people per week.  This will bring the total number of international arrivals to 6,000 per week by Monday 12th October.  This is intended to make it easier for Australian citizens and permanent residents to return home while ensuring the ongoing mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine system can cope with the number of arrivals.

Currently, there are limited international flights into Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Perth.  International flights into Melbourne are still suspended due to the local outbreak.

The Australian Government has also announced special concessions for holders of certain temporary visas who are currently stuck outside Australia and unable to return. Ordinarily, these visa holders would be required to meet certain residence requirements as well as be physically present in Australia in order to apply to transition from their temporary visa status to that of a permanent resident.  Relief may now be granted in the form of an alternative concessional residence period as well as permission to lodge their applications offshore.

Please feel free to contact ASG Immigration to discuss these changes or if you have any other questions and require assistance with Australian (or UK) inbound migration.
